The majority of inbound international flights will be destined for Auckland Airport. The University of Waikato is located in Hamilton, less than two hours drive from Auckland.
Transport to Hamilton from Auckland
If you are travelling directly from the airport, transport information is available through the Auckland Airport website.
There are three options for transportation between Auckland International Airport and Hamilton:
- rental car at the airport: This is a good option if you are planning to do a bit of sight-seeing around New Zealand before / after ICADL—but please do be aware of how tired you may be after a long international flight and that you may not be aware of all New Zealand driving regulations. New Zealand has had tragic incidents in the recent past in which exhausted visitors have hopped into a rental car after a long haul flight. If you do wish to rent a car for individual sight-seeing, please consider renting in Hamilton after you’ve had a chance to recover from your trip.
- Intercity bus: https://www.intercity.co.nz/
The bus runs direct from Auckland Airport to Hamilton CBD. It’s best to book online, particularly for the return Hamilton to Auckland International bus as they fill up fast. The bus fare is only $20 and wifi is available on board. Give yourselves a treat and book Gold Class for only $5 extra: the seat is wider and more comfortable and the view is better.
- shuttle: the Roadcat (https://www.roadcat.co.nz/) and Aerolink (http://www.aerolink.nz/) shuttle services run between Auckland Airport and Hamilton, and will drop you off at your hotel. The shuttles should be booked in advance. The regular shuttle runs are usually between 7am and 11pm, so if you are arriving in the wee hours of the morning then you might want to book a room at one of the airport hotels rather than wait in the airport terminal.
Whichever transportation you take, be sure to take in the lovely countryside! You’re arriving in spring and some of the grass is so brilliantly green that it hurts the eyes.
